At FLAVIA, our love for animals has pushed us to create a brand respectful of them. It is why we decided to choose a substitute of leather for our handbags, a sustainable cruelty-free fabric made out of recycled nylon that looks and feels like leather but did not require any animal suffering for us to enjoy the designs.
We felt it was time to bring on the market a handbag brand that is respectful of animals, is high quality and fashionable at the same time. That is how FLAVIA was born.
We believe that high fashion can be cruelty-free, and that traditional leather should not be synonym of good quality anymore. With today’s technological innovations, we have the power to offer high quality substitutes that fit both our style and values.
While we are dedicated to providing handbag designs respectful of animals, we do not want to disregard the importance of respecting our environment.
Our commitment to sustainability is very important to us, which is why it has been a key consideration in all of our decision-making processes.
We have searched for the right material for a long time, and the best alternative we have found is a cruelty-free fabric made out of 60% of recycled nylon. Using recycled nylon fibres reduces the dependence on petroleum as a raw material source. It reduces toxic emissions from incinerators and causes less air, water and soil contamination compared to using non-recycled nylon.
We have considered a number of cruelty-free fabrics made out of fruit waste, but we came to the conclusion that these fabrics were not as sustainable as the one we chose. (It was a ratio of 20% fruit waste and 80% PU, which is not as good.)
The production of the fabric takes place in production units certified ISO 9001/14001 and does not contain hazardous chemicals such as formaldehyde, phthalates, heavy metals, dyes banned, and disperse allergenic dyes.
In addition, the production process is water-based and free of organic solvents. The innovation in the production process results in 70% less water and reduces CO2 emissions by 35%.
We have also done what is necessary to centralize production as much as possible. The handbags are made in Florence, Italy where almost all of our suppliers are located. Only the cruelty-free fabric is made in Japan, which is not ideal for the transportation impact on the environment. However, it is the best alternative on the market for now.
We are not perfect in terms of sustainability, but as a young brand we are fully committed to evolving and improving our environmental efforts to become more and more sustainable over time. As we grow, we keep searching for even more innovative and sustainable fabrics, manufacturers of fabrics in Europe to prioritize the shortest circuit possible.
Sustainability is a key concern at FLAVIA, which is why we are proud to present the sustainable efforts we already have in place, but we want to be transparent about the fact that we can always do better, do more for the environment, which is why we never stop searching for new technologies that push the limits of sustainable innovation.
For our next collection, our goal is to source certified GOTS cotton for the lining of the handbag. We had envisioned doing so for our first collection but we were unfortunately unable to do so due to supplying difficulties.
The handbags are designed in Belgium and are made in Italy. The factory we collaborate with is located in Florence, has over 15 years of expertise in the industry and the owner got his taste for artisan work passed down from his father who was an artisan himself.
The factory employs 15 people, both men and women who are all paid properly for their work and over time.
As a small brand, we do not have the capability to conduct audits ourselves, however large brands have conducted successful audits of the factory.
